Profile
Prof. Beatriz Prieto Simón is an ICREA Research Professor with a scientific career of more than 20 years in the field of biosensors, nanotechnology, materials science, bioengineering and electrochemistry. She is a leading-expert in electrochemical biosensors, her main expertise covering the design, micro- and nanofabrication and surface chemistry of nanomaterials, and their integration into diagnostics fit-for-purpose. Since 2012, and prior to joining the Universitat Rovira i Virgili as Ramón y Cajal Fellow in September 2018, she led a multidisciplinary research group on electrochemical biosensors for clinical and environmental applications, first at the University of South Australia (Adelaide), and later at Monash University (Melbourne), built thanks to the success obtaining research funding mainly from the Australian Research Council, and from various industry stakeholders. The research of her current team aims to unveil fundamental advances on synergies at the interface of nanostructured materials and biological processes to lay the foundation to build smart platforms based on principles found in nature. The group’s main research interest is on exploiting the knowledge acquired to address diagnostic issues pointed out by clinicians and end-users to underpin technology adoption, and thus its translation from concept to application in the real world.

About ICIQ
About the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ)
ICIQ is a public foundation dedicated to chemical research aimed at addressing global challenges such as the climate emergency and human health. Recognised with two Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence accreditations since 2014, the centre hosts 250 researchers distributed across 19 research groups focused on sustainable catalysis, renewable energies, and decarbonization, as well as molecular medicine. These groups drive frontier research using both computational and experimental tools. ICIQ scientists have secured a total of 26 projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC), and nine of them are ICREA professors (Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies). Located in Tarragona, ICIQ works closely with industry to enhance its competitiveness, fostering the development of innovative applications and the training of qualified professionals. As a CERCA centre and a member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), ICIQ is committed to sustainable and equitable development, open science, and the social impact of research.
