Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory Technician (Ref: Technician 2025-01 NMR)
Looking for an exciting opportunity in one of the leading scientific research institutes? Come join us at ICIQ!
The Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) is seeking a Laboratory Technician to work in the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Unit of the Reaction Technologies Department.
ICIQ is committed to performing excellent research at the frontier of knowledge in the broad area of chemistry (Catalysis, Artificial Photosynthesis, Activation of Small Molecules, Photovoltaics, Functional Molecular Assemblies and Chemical Biology, from either theoretical or experimental perspectives). The institute also aims at training the future generation of scientists by offering high-quality educational programmes to master, PhD students and postdoctoral researchers (Full details on http://www.iciq.org/).
Our mission is to lead, from the vantage point of molecular science, cross-strategies for solving major social and economic challenges, such as climate change and sustainable supply of energetic and raw materials, thereby contributing to the establishment of a knowledge-based economy and improving citizens’ quality of life in our influence area.
The candidate will work in the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Unit. This core facilities Unit provides researchers with access to a wide range of NMR experiments both under automation or manual mode. The unit also advises researchers on the most appropriate experiment to their needs, and it trains and instructs researchers in using NMR, what information can be obtained from NMR experiments and how to optimize the instrumental resources available.
The services offered from the NMR Unit are:
Tasks and Responsibilities:
Checking possible new developments/experiments/improvements
Cryoprobe maintenance. Coordination with the cryoprobe supplier
Daily check of instruments performance. Spectral quality.
Detecting and managing formative needs
Detecting and managing instrument malfunctions
Doing and checking orders from suppliers
Help to users
Managing audits from internal/external sources
Managing access permits for new users
Monthly check of instruments performance. Shimming
New users training
NMR equipment maintenance. Retiring measured samples and restarting
NMR equipment maintenance. Liquid helium refilling
NMR equipment maintenance. Liquid nitrogen refilling
Participating in talks, webinars, meetings
Periodical check of instruments performance. Pulses
Periodical check of safety procedures
Preparing and running experiments for users outside of the ICIQ
Running experiments requested by users
All these tasks are carried out under the supervision of the unit manager or, where applicable, the immediate supervisor
Candidate’s Profile:
Chemistry degree
Advanced level of English, written and spoken
Knowledge of informatics (Windows, Office, NMR managing software)
Valued qualities:
Previous experience with NMR instruments (preferably Bruker)
Previous experience in maintenance of NMR instruments (preferably Bruker)
We offer:
A permanent full-time employment contract.
Remuneration according to individual’s qualification/experience
Annual salary split into twelve monthly payments.

Selection Process
ICIQ’s selection process usually entails the following phases:
Pre-selection: The pre-selection process will be based on qualifications and expertise as reflected on the candidates’ CVs. This phase is merit-based.
Interview: Preselected candidates will be interviewed by the Hiring Manager of the position and the appointed Selection Committee.
Offer Letter: Once the successful candidate is selected, the People Unit will extend a Job Offer, specifying the start day, salary and overall job conditions.
The Selection Committee for this process is composed of:
Dr. Gisela Colet, Manager of the Research Support Area
Dr. Gabriel González, Manager of the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance unit
Dr. Israel Macho, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance technician
A member of the Human Resources Unit
The evaluation committee will perform the assessment ensuring the absence of conflict of interest with any of the candidates, and will sign a Declaration of Absence of Conflict of Interest (DACI) to that end. In case a conflict of interest arises, the evaluator will be substituted by a different evaluator with similar expertise.

About ICIQ
About the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ)
ICIQ is a public foundation dedicated to chemical research aimed at addressing global challenges such as the climate emergency and human health. Recognised with two Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence accreditations since 2014, the centre hosts 250 researchers distributed across 19 research groups focused on sustainable catalysis, renewable energies, and decarbonization, as well as molecular medicine. These groups drive frontier research using both computational and experimental tools. ICIQ scientists have secured a total of 26 projects funded by the European Research Council (ERC), and nine of them are ICREA professors (Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies). Located in Tarragona, ICIQ works closely with industry to enhance its competitiveness, fostering the development of innovative applications and the training of qualified professionals. As a CERCA centre and a member of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), ICIQ is committed to sustainable and equitable development, open science, and the social impact of research.
